From 16 April 2026, the thresholds used to determine methamphetamine contamination and when a property is considered uninhabitable are clearly set out.

Testing is not required routinely, but it can be useful in some circumstances, particularly where insurance requirements or property records make testing appropriate.

Methamphetamine Testing and Contamination Levels

The guide explains the key thresholds used from April 2026:

• Below 15 µg/100cm²: Low-level residue
• 15–30 µg/100cm²: Contaminated and cleaning is required
• Above 30 µg/100cm²: Uninhabitable and full remediation is required
• Suspected clandestine laboratory: Authorities must be notified and a full assessment and remediation arranged

Contamination is assessed on a room-by-room basis, so the required response can depend on where residue is found.
